What is Iliotibial Band Friction Syndrome?
Iliotibial Band Friction Syndrome (ITBFS) is a common overuse injury, especially among runners and cyclists. The iliotibial band is a thick band of connective tissue running from the hip to the shin. ITBFS occurs when it repeatedly rubs against the lateral femoral epicondyle (the outer part of the knee), leading to inflammation and sharp, lateral knee pain. This friction is typically aggravated by repetitive flexion and extension of the knee, such as during running, particularly downhill.
How do Ultimate Performance Insoles help treat Iliotibial Band Syndrome?
Poor biomechanics, such as excessive foot pronation or leg length discrepancies, can contribute to ITBFS by altering the alignment of the lower limb and therefore, increasing tension in the IT band. Ultimate Performance Insoles help address these biomechanical issues by providing better foot support and alignment. Specifically, insoles reduce overpronation and promote neutral foot positioning. As a result, improve overall lower limb alignment. This, in turn, reduces strain and friction on the IT band during movement.
By supporting more efficient movement patterns, insoles not only aid in treating existing ITBFS symptoms but also help prevent recurrence. When combined with targeted stretching and strengthening exercises, particularly for the glutes, hips, and tensor fasciae latae, insoles become a valuable part of any treatment plan.
